The holidays in Michigan are pure magic. As someone who's called this state home my whole life, there's nothing quite like winter here — snow-draped pines, cozy small-town vibes, and cities bursting with festive spirit. Whether you’re looking for a fun family outing or the perfect date night, Michigan offers endless ways to celebrate Christmas. Here are some of my favorite things to do during the most wonderful time of the year!

1. Wander Through Holiday Nights at Greenfield Village

If you want to step into a real-life snow globe, Holiday Nights at Greenfield Village in Dearborn is a must-see. This historic village transforms into a 19th-century winter wonderland with horse-drawn carriages, carolers, bonfires, and twinkling lights. Sip on hot cocoa while enjoying the sights and sounds of Christmas past — it’s an experience that’ll warm your heart (even on a chilly night!).

📍 Dearborn, MI

🎄 2. Experience the Magic of Frankenmuth

Michigan’s own "Little Bavaria" is one of the coziest places to visit during the holidays. Frankenmuth pulls out all the stops with its charming European architecture, twinkling lights, and festive cheer. Stop by Bronner's CHRISTmas Wonderland — the world’s largest Christmas store — to find unique ornaments or simply take in the holiday magic. Don’t forget to treat yourself to a classic chicken dinner at Zehnder’s or the Bavarian Inn!

📍 Frankenmuth, MI

🏂 3. Hit the Slopes at Boyne Mountain or Crystal Mountain

If you love outdoor adventure, Michigan’s ski resorts offer the perfect blend of snowy fun and cozy relaxation. Boyne Mountain and Crystal Mountain are winter favorites for skiing, snowboarding, or just sitting by the fire with a warm drink. Both resorts deck out their lodges with holiday lights and offer fun seasonal activities like snowshoeing and sleigh rides.

📍 Boyne Falls, MI / Thompsonville, MI

🏙️ 4. Enjoy Detroit’s Winter Wonderland

Detroit shines bright during the holidays. Check out the Detroit Christmas Tree in Campus Martius Park, lace up your skates at the ice rink, and explore the Cadillac Square Holiday Market for unique local gifts and treats. The city’s historic architecture and twinkling lights make for a picture-perfect evening.

📍 Detroit, MI

🎶 5. Attend a Holiday Performance at the Grand Rapids Civic Theatre

Few things capture the holiday spirit like a live performance. In Grand Rapids, the Civic Theatre offers beloved holiday classics like A Christmas Carol or The Nutcracker. It’s the perfect way to escape the cold, enjoy a bit of magic, and support local arts.

📍 Grand Rapids, MI

🍪 6. Warm Up with a Festive Treat

No Michigan holiday experience is complete without a sweet treat! Grab a fresh doughnut and hot cider at one of our many cider mills (yes, they're still open in winter!). Or stop by a local bakery for a warm cookie or a pastry. As a former baker myself, I know that there’s something truly special about a fresh-baked good on a cold winter day — it’s like a hug in food form.

🌟 Create Your Own Michigan Christmas Traditions

The holidays are about making memories, and Michigan is full of places and experiences that make the season bright. Whether you’re strolling through a light display, exploring a charming village, or simply enjoying the warmth of home, this season is about finding your sweet spot — and Michigan offers it in spades.

Wishing you a warm and joyful holiday season! If you’re ever looking for a home where you can create your own Christmas traditions, I’m here to help.
